D.O. Ribeira Sacra – D.O. Valdeorras

Spain

The Spanish winery Ponte Da Boga, established in 1898, is the oldest in the Ribeira Sacra winegrowing region, located in the northwestern area of Galicia. With some of its vineyards exceeding 120 years of age, it stands as a beacon of tradition and history for the area. Ribeira Sacra, meaning “Sacred Shores”, derives its name from the steep slopes that descend to the Sil River, which flows through the region, blending natural beauty with a unique winemaking culture.

The winery focuses on cultivating native grape varieties, emphasizing authenticity and the uniqueness of the region. Among the standout varieties are Mencía, Godello, Albariño, Brancellao, and Sousón, each bringing distinctive characteristics to the wines. For instance, Mencía is known for producing elegant, fruity red wines, while white varieties like Godello and Albariño offer wines with refreshing acidity and aromatic complexity.

Due to the steep slopes and challenging terrain, harvesting often requires traditional methods, and in some cases, it can only be accessed via water routes. This labor-intensive process has earned the recognition of “heroic viticulture”. The dedication and effort put into this demanding work are reflected in the exceptional quality of Ponte Da Boga’s wines, which have received numerous awards in international competitions.

Ponte Da Boga remains committed to tradition while incorporating modern techniques to ensure that its wines authentically represent the essence of Ribeira Sacra.
